Why You Need Equine Electric Fencing
Horses are majestic animals. They are powerful and intelligent creatures, but these characteristics can be both a blessing and a curse. Horses know how strong and smart they are and will often use those attributes to test boundaries around them. If (or when) a horse manages to escape and gets the refreshing taste of pure freedom, it will often try to run away and will be difficult to capture. Recapturing and relocating a horse can be a difficult task, especially if the horse has no desire or incentive to return on its own. It is therefore crucial to ensure that their paddocks and pastures are properly secured.
Equine electric fencing can help you secure your horses in more ways than one. Unfortunately, a horse’s desire for freedom is not the only reason to use electrified fences to protect it. There are other dangers in Australia, such as horse rustlers and poachers, not to mention the occasional dingo with a taste for foal meat. Equine electric fencing can thus be used to both protect horses from themselves and to keep them safe from threatening external elements.
How Equine Electric Fencing Works To Protect Your Horses
Now that you know why equine electric fencing is necessary for the protection of your horses and other livestock, it is time to examine how you can implement it on your farm or ranch. It is important to remember that electrified fences are not actually meant to harm anyone or anything, especially the people and animals they are supposed to protect. Electrified fences are only supposed to serve as physical barriers that discourage any attempt at crossing them. The fact that they are non-lethal is a feature of the product.
As we mentioned before, horses are smart. You do not have to worry about your horse accidentally electrocuting itself just so you can keep it from galloping into the great outdoors. Electrified fences have just enough “kick” to ensure that any curious human or animal who dares touch it will learn a simple lesson very quickly. Anything that touches the fence will feel pain for a brief moment and will then realise that touching it again is not a good idea. There have even been unconfirmed reports of horses being able to “sense” when an electrified fence is activated, which means they will usually give it a much wider berth than with a regular fence where they would feel comfortable standing right up against it.
The Best Place To Acquire Equine Electric Fencing
Protecting your horses (and other livestock) is as easy as purchasing the right products and making sure you purchase them from a reputable seller. While electrified fences are easy to install and generally safe to be around, there is still an element of risk involved. It’s your life and your livelihood at stake, so the choice you make is more important than you may think.
Nemtek’s solutions are affordable, which means you won’t have to commit to purchasing a certain acreage of electrified fence products if you only need to protect a small paddock or a specific area on your farm. With over 30 years in the industry, we also understand the importance of safety. When you choose Nemtek, you are choosing a brand you can trust.

Electric Fence Installation And Compliance Explained
There are many laws, bylaws, and regulations we need to abide by in our everyday lives. Almost everything in South Africa is regulated in one form or another, such as building in restricted or semi-restricted areas, or generating your own electricity. These laws are meant to protect the citizens of the country and to ensure they can enjoy a quality of life that is deemed appropriate by the government and is consistent with generally accepted global standards. Electric fence installation and use is no different.
When you are installing or repairing electrified fences, you probably know the dangers involved. You are working with high voltages and even though electrified fences are generally not designed to be lethal, it is always possible for something to go wrong during installation or routine maintenance, which is why it is important to ensure that you are compliant with the legislation and safety standards that were created to protect you. If you don’t know what you are doing, or if you aren’t sure of what you are doing (or how to do it safely), it’s better to entrust an expert with the job. In this article, we will explore some of the relevant legislation you need to be aware of in South Africa, as well as what you can do to ensure you stay safe and compliant.
What Does South African Law Say About Electric Fence Installation?
The most important legislation to be aware of is the Occupational Health and Safety Act 1983 (Act no 85 of 1983), especially the clause under the “Electric Fences” section. Under this legislation, all installations that occurred after October 2012 (the year in which the legislation took effect) have to adhere to SANS 10222-3 (or equivalent) specifications and a certificate of compliance for any such installation needs to be issued by a registered Electric Fence System Installer (EFSI).
This means that you cannot simply string together some wire, hook it up to a power supply, and hope for the best. Even if the installation of your brand-new electric fence went smoothly, there still needs to be a guarantee that it meets the specifications mentioned above in order to ensure that no harm is caused unnecessarily (including to potential criminals who attempt to break into your property). Your goal is to create a deterrent for criminals or a non-lethal barrier for animals, not to create a death trap (a process that is made exceptionally easy if you stick to the regulations).
How Nemtek Can Help You Achieve Compliance
Physical safety and security are the two biggest concerns when it comes to electric fence installation. When you choose products or installers, you would want to know that you are choosing them from a company that takes the abovementioned requirements very seriously. While balancing safety requirements with your security needs can be a difficult balancing act, it is much easier with the help of Nemtek.
Nemtek has taken great care to ensure that all our products and installation procedures adhere to the strictest guidelines as set out by the legislation mentioned earlier. We even offer training courses to both official Nemtek installers and anyone with an eye on becoming an installer of electrified fencing. That’s how much we care about you and your safety.

Keep Your Perimeter Monitored During Power Cuts with our Perimeter Alarm Light System
The perimeter alarm light system is powered by a 2.0Amp Nemtek Power Pack with a 7Ah battery for backup during power outages and could help detect and deter intruders from attacking the fence line even when the power is out.
Our alarm light system can be installed onto most of Nemtek’s electric fencing brackets and posts. To illuminate the area and ensure uniform coverage, the lights are installed at 6m to 9m intervals along the electric fence line. When the electric fence energizer alarms, the perimeter alarm light system will illuminate the triggered zone for easy detection. The alarm light system can also be triggered manually using a remote control at any time. The lights are LED, consume turn on instantly. They also face downward, reducing light pollution.
Features:
- A single power pack can power up to 20 sets of lights (40 in total)
- Lights are installed at 6m to 9m intervals along the fence line with 200m coverage on a power pack
- Lights are downward facing
- Lights are LED so no warm-up time is required
- Lights can be triggered in three ways:
- Energizer alarm trigger
- Remote on and off
- Day/night switch
- Wet/dry contacts are configurable on the power-supply trigger module
- Low-voltage cabling is run along the fence line to provide power to the lights

How Does Nemtek Academy’s Electric Fence Training Work?
Nemtek Academy offers several courses (presented as tiered modules) that you can undertake to learn more about topics including planning a fence, safety measures, energizers, animal control, and network maintenance. It works like any other training facility in that you will have to sign up and attend classes, whether it’s in-person in a classroom or online (either through self-study or virtual classrooms). We will be there to assist you every step of the way.
There are five different modules you can sign up for (which you can view by clicking here), each with its own focus, learning outcomes, assessments and certifications. These modules range from basic installation practices to the accredited Module 5, that upon successful completion, will allow you to register with the Department of Labour in order to be able to issue a Certificate of Compliance (COC), with the latter being a requirement that is mandated by the South African Occupational Health and Safety Act of 1993. These modules are designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills you will need for safe and efficient electric fence installation, animal management and faultfinding.
If you have decided to sign up for one or more of our courses, you also need to be aware that each module has its own requirements that need to be met before you sign up for that module. The basic requirement shared among all modules is that you need to be able to read and write, and the more advanced modules also require that you complete all the previous modules in the series before you can sign up for them. The final module, which covers the COC, requires at least 2 years practical experience in electrical fence installations and the passing of a pre-assessment test. You can read more about the prerequisites for individual courses by clicking here.
